Neighborhood Food has been established for quite some time in Berawa, and they are finally ready for an extension.

Translating vision into responsible expression.

From a small cafe that serves the famous Melbourne-style breakfasts, they acquire the whole building behind them, allowing them to extend their seating area. To help the business grow, they also utilize the existing rooms upstairs as rental offices.

Now, with the spacious space, we have a lot to play with. And collaboration with Maya, the owner of this establishment, we deliver a space where it feels raw, natural, connected, while also being comfortable and cozy.

The design embraces the style of the 80s. This will show in the material that we chose, where for the facade we have the breeze blocks at the office area, the glass blocks at the facade, and up to ceramic tiles that we use in the restrooms. That carries through to the door openings, the divider, basically everywhere.

The facade is something that we need to work on, as it feels quite enclosed and people cannot see the shop from outside. The creepers plant is nice to keep as it makes the space quite shaded and acts as the sound barrier from the heavy Berawa traffic. So, Maya decided to bring on her creativity with the angled signage so that the main traffic from the east for an easier way finding.
Entering the shop, we positioned the bar to be bigger than before to accommodate the increased capacity, while also being mindful of creating an awareness towards the new seating at the back. So, from the entrance you can already see the banquet seating to your right, booth seating to your left, and many more seating at the back.
While you’re going to be tempted to work on your laptop at the front seating area, the air-conned space has a strict no-screen policy, so that you’re gonna be guided to sit at the back. The front part is for people to have coffee, have their food, basically dedicated for a higher turnover.
Living in Bali makes you want to be outside as much as possible, and creating a comfortable outdoor space is a challenge with the heat. Worry not, as the semi-outdoor seating area at the back has its own charm. They come with red brick flooring and transparent roof, equipped with wooden planks at the ceiling that help stop the heat, while also adding a character to the space. And to stay consistent, the wooden planks are also designed to be in square patterns.
