The restaurant concept is a Japanese teppanyaki-style steakhouse restaurant, where people can sit around the teppan, a big metal plate or iron griddle, while watching the skilled maneuvers of the chefs preparing the food.

Translationg visions into responsible expression.

The main problem that we need to address before we start designing is the restaurant location. As it is a part of a villa complex, it is quite difficult to pull people to come from the outside. People see this as a part of the villa, which is not so interesting to go and hangout with your friends or family. In order to eliminate that problem, we design it be in contrast to the existing building, to have a totally different design style. That way, we then have the opportunity to change the perspective of the passersby, so that now, they can see that it’s a different establishment.

Japanese traditional design style is chosen as the main concept and the design language, in correlation with the teppanyaki style cuisine, which started to become more popular after around 1945, post-war era.
This is shown in the overall material selections of the space. At the façade, we create a look of a traditional house with the traditional angled roofing, with wooden sliding doors with squared window panes. Inside, we introduce the red color as the main color palette, in complement with the natural light-colored wood and stone wall cladding that we use to clad the walls and the floorings.
As for the layout, we want to create the teppan bar as the main attraction of the overall space. The management requested the bar for teppan and the beverages to be separated, so we have the beverages bar right on the left-hand side of the entrance, where guests would either wait there while waiting for their company, or the tables are being prepared. And, the teppan bar is right at the front, being your main focus when you walk-in.
The wooden structure above the teppanyaki and the drinking bar draws inspiration from traditional Japanese “post-and-beam” architecture, where it features square wooden beams and columns, arranged in grid-like pattern, with exposed wooden framework, to celebrate the Japanese craftsmanship. This grid pattern then carries on towards the wooden shelvings, the decorative elements, basically everywhere. This is to make sure we follow a thorough design language throughout.
